Today’s Painting

rain_tomorrow1Today I am working on developing demo paintings to use in an upcoming pastel landscape class. This class begins in May at the School of Light and Color and  will explore painting various elements of the ‘scape such as skies, clouds, trees, still water and streams, waterfalls etc.

I love the colors, which seems to be the purpose of your class as well. It’ll be a wonderful demo for whoever you’re teaching.
I struggle with clouds… how do you do them with pastel (that is pastel right?)

Clouds are filled with more color than one might think. Especially on a sunny day, they subtly reflect the colors of the earth beneath. I start by painting the negative space, the sky, and then gradually build the shape of the clouds with subtle values and colors. I hardly ever use pure white.
